Hear Rod explain why he wrote the book

Rod Chamberlin, author of Beyond Exit Planning

The Story

Rod founded Magnum Wealth Management in 1991 — originally as Chamberlain & Associates, operating out of a spare bedroom. He started with almost nothing, once scraping together couch change for gas money to meet a prospect who didn't show up. That hunger never left.

Over 35 years, he built deep, multigenerational relationships with over 1,000 clients. His approach is narrow and deep — not wide and shallow. He doesn't chase volume. He develops trust over decades, often working with the same families across two or three generations.

The book came from a pattern Rod kept seeing: he was having the same conversation with owner after owner about structuring their business for maximum value, positioning it for an exit, and planning what comes next. He put it in a book to reach more people.

Beyond Exit Planning wasn't written for profit. It was written because when a good business fails, it hurts everyone. When a great business thrives, it helps everyone.

Business owners are often misunderstood

They're driven. Focused. They have a strong work ethic. And that can be misinterpreted as being greedy or money-hungry. Rod has found the opposite — business owners have a servant's heart. They set themselves on fire to keep the people around them warm.

Most owners, despite a financially successful sale, are unhappy one year later. The transaction went fine. The money landed. But something was missing — identity, purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. The book addresses that challenge directly.

The two most important takeaways: how to assemble an exit planning team you can trust, and how to develop a healthy mindset for life after the sale. Without a strong team, the strategy won't work. Without a healthy mindset, there's a strong chance you'll wind up regretting it.

“Like most people, I started out wanting to be successful. But after achieving a certain level of success, I found that what really was driving me was the impact we're having on the lives of our clients.”

Build and preserve wealth

Rod's practice, Magnum Wealth Management, is based in Irvine, California. The firm specializes in wealth management, advanced gifting strategies, estate planning, and exit planning for business owners and entrepreneurs.

Making money and knowing what to do with it are two separate things. Rod dug deep into his craft early on, developing advanced strategies that could have a real impact on his clients' lives. The more he did that, the more opportunity followed. His clients stay because the relationship is narrow, deep, and built on decades of trust.
